Data sources
Food Info combines six public food-composition and product databases into a single panel view. Each source is credited below with its publisher, licence, and the attribution language those licences require.
USDA FoodData Central (FDC)
Publisher:U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service.
What we use:SR Legacy, Foundation, Survey FNDDS, and Branded subsets. Provides the bulk of reference foods, fatty-acid breakdowns, and US-market branded products.
Licence:U.S. public domain. No restrictions on commercial use.
McCance & Widdowson's CoFID (UK)
Publisher:Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID), formerly Public Health England.
What we use:The 2021 Composition of Foods Integrated Dataset workbook, reference nutrition data for ~2,900 foods in the UK diet.
Licence:Open Government Licence v3.0. Commercial use permitted with attribution:"Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0."
ANSES Ciqual (France)
Publisher:French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES).
What we use:The Ciqual 2025 table, ~3,500 foods relevant to French diet with 67 nutrient components.
Licence:Licence Ouverte 2.0(French government open licence). Commercial use permitted with attribution to ANSES / Ciqual.
The Danish Food Composition Database, DTU (Denmark)
Publisher:National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark.
What we use:The Danish Food Composition Database version 5.5, ~1,400 reference foods relevant to the Danish diet. We import a subset of the ~250 components that align to FDC nutrients.
Licence:Used with permission from the National Food Institute (DTU); attribution required on every page. Cite as:"The Danish Food Composition Database, version 5.5, National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark."
AUSNUT (Australia)
Publisher:Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ).
What we use:AUSNUT 2023 Food nutrient profiles, ~3,700 foods consumed in Australia with 53 nutrients per food.
Licence:Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Australia. Commercial use permitted with attribution to FSANZ / AUSNUT.
Open Food Facts
Publisher:Open Food Facts, a French non-profit collaborative project.
What we use:A country-filtered subset of branded products with macros and labelling data, totalling around two million products across the markets our reference databases cover. We do not ingest products that fail our minimum nutrient-completeness check.
Licence:Database, Open Database Licence (ODbL); individual contributor content, CC-BY-SA 3.0. Both permit commercial use with share-alike obligations on the database itself (not on our user-facing UI).
Reference daily intakes (used for percent-DV calculations)
- UK Reference Intakes, Department of Health (UK). Used by default for UK and EU panels.
- FDA 2016 Daily Values, U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Used when the user selects the US reference table.
How we combine the data
Every nutrient row from every source is normalised to a single per-100 g schema keyed against the FDC nutrient catalogue. When the same food name appears in multiple databases, Food Info's search prefers the source most relevant to your region (see the country selector in the top navigation). Detail pages always include the source attribution alongside the nutrient panel so you can see where each number came from.
