About Sugars

Sugars are short carbohydrate molecules, glucose, fructose, sucrose, lactose, that taste sweet and digest quickly. They occur naturally in fruit (mostly fructose) and dairy (lactose), and are added to processed foods as table sugar, honey, syrups, or fruit-juice concentrate.

The body processes all sugars similarly at the cellular level, but the package matters. The fructose in a whole apple comes wrapped in fiber and water that slow absorption. The same fructose in a fizzy drink hits the liver in a rush that promotes fat storage and insulin resistance over time.

UK guidance: no more than 30 g of free sugars per day for adults, roughly 7 teaspoons. ("Free sugars" covers added sugars plus fruit juice and honey; the sugars locked inside whole fruit and dairy don't count.) The UK average is about double the limit.
